Trust

Trust is possibly the single most important thing. Everything else depends on it.

• Trust is earned, and is not a given.
• If you're lucky people may superficially trust you when you start a new working relationship but it's never deep until they see how you act. Words are important but rarely enough until you've built trust through actions.

Lead by example

Lead by example. Don't say one thing and then do another. This is usually done with the best of intentions, but it doesn't work e.g. telling them to take leave but not taking it yourself, or asking people to log work but not tracking it with them.
