Trust
Trust is possibly the single most important thing. Everything else depends on it.
- Trust is earned, and is not a given.
- If you're lucky people may superficially trust you when you start a new working relationship but it's never deep until they see how you act. Words are important but rarely enough until you've built trust through actions.
- A great way to build trust is to give it
- Being let down is just a 3% tax you pay on the investment of trusting people - Kat Cole https://pca.st/episode/299ecec9-12d0-409d-a888-119962948947
- There are 3 defining characteristics of trust (Jon Levy, The Art and Science of Cultivating Influence)
- Competence - you're ability to do something
- Honesty/Integrity - you're truthful
- Benevolent - you have my best interests at heart
- Not all equally valuable
Lead by example
Lead by example. Don't say one thing and then do another. This is usually done with the best of intentions, but it doesn't work e.g. telling them to take leave but not taking it yourself, or asking people to log work but not tracking it with them.
